Disneyland Celebrates Diversity
On October 4th – 6th 2013 , people from all over the world traveled to the Disneyland Resort to celebrate Gay Days Anaheim. Although not an official Disney event, the theme parks at the Disneyland Resort give their full support to Gay Days Anaheim, a privately run yearly event at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The event celebrates gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning peoples from around the globe and creates a fun, family friendly event for these individuals, their friends and families, and anyone else who supports these groups.
The event includes a Gay Days Welcome Center, group dinners, cocktail parties, club outings, dancing, special guests and speakers, and so much more. You can also pick up an official gay days tee-shirt to commemorate the event. Park officials support the event by providing meeting spaces, special activities, event promoting, and other special support as needed. Disneyland bakers even get in on the fun by baking special confectionaries for the event, such as the sparkly rainbow-glitter-heart-cookies shown in the photo above. The only reason Disneyland does not call this an official Disneyland event is that they don’t name any event “official” that does not rent out the entire park for the event.
Gay Day participants have a tradition of wearing red shirts while in the parks to easily recognize other event guests. It’s actually hilarious to watch parents who dressed their families in matching red shirts so that they were easy to locate in the crowds stand bewildered at the giant crowds of people who are also in red shirts, so if you are dressing your family to stand out among the crowd you may want to choose a color other than red for the event days.
Guests who do not wish to take place in the Gay Days Anaheim activities are of course still welcome to enjoy Disneyland durring the festivities. As a meter of fact, other than the increased crowds and wait times I encourage non-LGBT families to visit the park durring the event and enjoy the fun atmosphere that envelops the resort and adds yet another layer of joy to your visit. Everyone is so happy, and energetic, and friendly durring Gay Days Anaheim that it adds a whole other layer of magic to the park.
Other groups also support the event such as the Family Equality Council, who sponsor a Family Scavenger Hunt, Family Lunch at the Plaza Inn, family networking reception called a Friendraiser, Live Radio Show Broadcasts of the event, and group Dinner at the local Medieval Times theatrical restaurant.Advocate.com also supports the event with on-line photo albums, event reporting, and more.
